The hydrocarbon fuel scan (HFS) is a qualitative gas
chromatography (GC) analysis, and is also referred to as
EPA method 8015 modified or ASTM D-3328 modified. Samples
are extracted or diluted into a solvent and analyzed using a
GC fitted with a flame ionization detector (FID). The
resultant output provides information on the boiling range
and general composition of the material in the sample.
Sample results are then compared to previously analyzed
hydrocarbon fuels, as well as specification properties and
the expected chemical properties of products based on their
physical characteristics. Typical quality control includes
analysis of an internal standard for retention time
verification, method blank analysis, and analysis of a known
mixture of n-alkanes.
