This test will provide information on
the boiling point of organic materials that are present in a
sample using gas chromatography (GC). Simulated distillation
is used to distinguish petroleum distillates such as
gasoline, diesel, and motor oil. If a sample contains
multiple petroleum products, simulated distillation can
provide information on each product. Information related to
the extent of degradation that gasoline or diesel has
degraded can also be ascertained. The results include a
description of the data, as well as a scaled picture, or
chromatogram, of the GC results. The patterns present on the
chromatogram, rather than a series of numbers, can be very
useful in conveying the information from this analysis.
